About “1000 Wheelchairs in 10 Countries” Initiative:

EquallyAble has entered into a partnership with Motivation, UK, an international charity and has launched the “1000 Wheelchairs in 10 Countries” campaign. With this global initiative, 100 wheelchairs will be provided in 10 different countries. Each wheelchair will cost $250 and be custom fitted to the individual needs. Every dollar spent on this initiative will be matched by a local partner in that country to provide training or service. Uganda, Pakistan and Bangladesh are the first few countries to get these wheelchairs; other countries are being considered and will be added later. Because conditions in these countries are harsh, commuting anywhere is a challenge for many individuals with disabilities. It is estimated that approximately 105 million people across the world need a wheelchair that is safe and appropriate for use in the place where they live. EquallyAble hopes to bridge this obstacle with high terrain wheelchairs. Equipped with special design and features, the wheelchairs provided are intended to make travel easier on rough dirt roads and mountainous terrain and to facilitate access to education, jobs and mobility.

About EquallyAble Foundation:

Since 2001, EquallyAble Foundation (formerly HelpHandicap Foundation) provided assistance to around 3898 in India and Uganda; over $669792 was approved. Over 15000 people attended different inclusion and disability awareness seminars/workshops in the USA.

EquallyAble has constantly strived to empower people with disabilities around the world – from supporting schools for intellectual disabilities; to exploring and using technology to solve social issues; to helping persons with disabilities get married, and to conducting inclusion and disability development seminars – we have dedicated ourselves to making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.

From Motivation UK

Just like Motivation, the team at EquallyAble focuses on helping disabled people live full, independent and healthy lives.

EquallyAble are funding 100 Motivation supportive seats for children with cerebral palsy in Uganda.

This is wonderful news – as these supportive seats are life-savers.

We have two types of supportive seat: the static Moti Start for very young children and the active Moti Go for older children.

Without the right support, children with cerebral palsy are frequently left lying on the floor. In the very worst cases, they die a slow and painful death – from malnutrition, respiratory problems or pressure sores.

When a child is fitted with a Moti Go or a Moti Start, the transformation is dramatic.

They take a huge developmental leap.

Because they’re no longer using all their energy trying to sit up, they start making eye contact and communicating with their families. Their posture, breathing and digestion improves immediately. As they get stronger and healthier, they learn to feed themselves. They even start going to school. Find out how a Moti Go has helped Lillie and her mum Jo-An by watching our photofilm.

EquallyAble aren’t stopping at 100 chairs.

With their ’1000 Wheelchairs in 10 Countries’ fundraising campaign, they’re aiming high! We’re delighted to be helping them make it all happen, and we’d like to give them a big thank you for their support.

After serving the disability community in India and the United States for several years, EquallyAble is now embarking on a new journey. We are excited to announce “1000 wheelchairs in 10 countries” initiative and is planning to work in a different country every year to empower persons with disabilities in that country. To this end, we are excited to say that we are launching a high terrain wheelchair initiative in Uganda and Pakistan. Both Uganda and Pakistan have been chosen after careful review of the needs of people with disabilities, available resources with our partner organizations Motivation UK and local organizations. More countries are under review and will be added later.

Why Uganda:

Cerebral palsy is the most common childhood disability in Uganda. Without support or access to expert knowledge and appropriate mobility devices, parents often struggle with caring for these children. Community attitudes towards the children can be dangerously negative; we have heard of some stories where family members encouraged them to drown or poison their child to avoid bringing shame on the family or wasting scarce family resources.

Children with cerebral palsy are not able to sit or walk independently which means that these children are prone to developing deformities, breathing and digestive difficulties. Without access to supportive seating, children cannot attend school and are restricted to the home. It is estimated that 90% of children with disabilities in developing countries don’t attend school. With a modified wheelchair, a stable supported sitting position enables the child to interact with the world and people around them as well as opening up opportunities outside the home.

EquallyAble is planning to provide 100 high terrain wheelchairs at a cost of $25,000 – $250 per individual.

These funds will be used to prescribe, supply and fit wheelchairs which meet their needs while working with parents support groups and training, funding for which has already been secured with the local partner organization in Uganda

Why Pakistan:

Recent conflicts and natural disasters have left many individuals with mobility impairments in Pakistan. Unfortunately, there are no statistics for the number of these people who require a wheelchair. However, it is evident across the country that those who do require a wheelchair do not have access to one, and the need is overwhelming.

As a result, most people with disabilities living in remote and inaccessible areas of Pakistan literally cannot leave their homes. They are unable to participate in society or earn a living. They experience severe secondary health problems, such as spinal curvature or respiratory problems, and are at serious risk of premature death from complications such as urinary infections.

An overwhelming need for active folding wheelchairs has also been highlighted in many areas of Pakistan where the mountainous terrain means that wheelchair users have to travel by bus or other local transportation to get anywhere. The active folding wheelchairs are suitable for use on rough ground but are also easily stowed for transportation through the remote mountains.

EquallyAble is planning to provide 100 high terrain/folding wheelchairs at a cost of $25,000 – $250 per individual. These funds will be used to fit wheelchairs which meet their needs and seek partner organization for capacity building, train, support and service.

Each of the wheelchairs provided under this program cost $250 and will be:

1) custom fitted to their needs;

2) designed for rugged terrains and dirt roads;

3) locally serviceable;

4) partner organization will equally match this donation with capacity building, training, support and service.

Total cost for providing high terrain wheelchairs in Uganda and Pakistan is $50, 000.

Coinciding with International Disability Day, EquallyAble Foundation announces the “1000 wheelchairs in 10 countries” initiative. “EquallyAble has long been looking to expand its operations beyond India and the USA,” states Mohammed Yousuf, Founder and President of EquallyAble. “We are excited about this opportunity to provide freedom and honor to people with mobility disabilities in the developing countries where such services are not available.”

It is estimated that approximately 105 million people across the world need a wheelchair that is safe and appropriate for use in the place where they live. Along with global partners, EquallyAble plans to distribute 100 high terrain wheelchairs in 10 countries each. Possible countries, besides Uganda and Pakistan, may include Somalia and Bangladesh. Because conditions in these countries are harsh, commuting anywhere is a challenge for many individuals with disabilities. EquallyAble hopes to bridge this obstacle with high terrain wheelchairs. Equipped with special design and features, the wheelchairs provided are intended to make travel easier on rough dirt roads and mountainous terrain. “Many individuals in developing countries lack access to the outside world,” Mohammed Yousuf says. “Our hope is that these wheelchairs will facilitate individuals to seek the education and employment they need to lead successful and independent lives.”
